Strong Purple Tigers return

The Cortland High volleyball team had a good Christmas break and it showed Monday night in its first match of 2015, a 25-12, 25-19, 25-19 win over visiting Faith Heritage.
“Mother Nature cooperated this year and we were able to get in some good practices and a tourney over the break,” Purple Tigers coach Cheri Olson said, her team now 7-3 in the OHSL Freedom/Liberty Division and overall. “I think that this helped us to come back strong from the vacation to get the win.”
CHS sharpened up taking part in the Watertown Pink Out Clash over the holidays, which helped when resuming OHSL play against Faith Heritage.
“The girls played well from the beginning,” said Coach Olson. “Shelina Carrion served very well. She ended the night with seven aces, but her consistency on the line was a huge factor in all three sets. She has really stepped up this season and I am proud of her.”
Senior Carrion had help on the service line, as senior Samantha Daniels added four aces while senior Jackie Hoch and junior Julia Marshall each served up a pair of aces. Daniels also excelled on defense, coming up with a handful of digs to lead the team.
Senior setter Danielle Lynch directed the CHS offense with 20 assists, as senior outside hitter Lyuda Levitskaya put away a team-high seven kills at the net. “Lyuda Levitskaya has really started swinging at the ball this season,” Olson noted.
Hoch and junior McKenzie Stark were also a big part of the Purple Tigers offense with five kills apiece at the net.
Faith Heritage got eight assists from setter Allie LaCourse, while Allie McCune had six kills and Sheba Jackson five.
CORTLAND JVs lost to Faith Heritage 17-25, 25-16, 25-13 and are now 3-7 on the season. Sophomore outside hitter Kacie Hubbard and freshman right side Kylie Stark had three aces each while freshman middle hitter Reanna Moran had three kills.
Both Cortland teams were slated to be right back in action today at Manlius-Pebble Hill, the JV match getting things started at 5:30 p.m.
