Purple Tigers add to streak

The Cortland High volleyball team showed some resiliency Thursday night in stretching its winning streak to five matches with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 win over visiting Fabius-Pompey.
“We played very well as a team,” Purple Tigers coach Cheri Olson said, her team now 9-3 in the OHSL Freedom/Liberty Division and overall. “We trailed in every set but never lost focus. We have seen our share of sets this season where that wasn’t the case, but tonight we were able to pick up our intensity to do what needed to get done to pull out the win. A large factor was our defense. Kristin Bush had 22 digs, Samantha Daniels and Shelina Carrion had 12 digs apiece. The girls weren’t letting anything hit the floor,” she added.
Sophomore libero Kristin Bush led the way in that respect with 22 digs, while senior outside hitter Samantha Daniels and senior setter Shelina Carrion had 12 digs apiece. Daniels also had five kills and three aces.
Senior middle blocker Ali Bustamante had 11 kills for the second match in a row while senior setter Danielle Lynch had 29 assists, nine digs, two kills and an ace. Olson said of Lynch that “Her consistent setting is why our hitters are improving throughout the season.”
Senior middle hitter Rouri St. Louis had 10 kills, 10 digs and four blocks for Fabius-Pompey (4-6 OHSL Patriot American and overall), while senior libero Megan Cash had 15 digs and junior setter Kelsey White eight assists and an ace.
CORTLAND JVs lost to Fabius-Pompey 25-27, 25-10, 25-11 and fell to 4-8 league and overall. Sophomore setter Chloe Bush had six assists and freshman Natalie Gier had two kills.
Both CHS squads visit Onondaga Central Monday starting at 6 p.m. with the JV match.
