Layoff doesn’t bother Trojans

Homer Central boys showed few symptoms of the long break between its narrow win over Oswego three days before Christmas and its return to the basketball court Friday night.
The Trojans jumped to an 11-point first quarter league and cruised behind the 25-point effort of Jerrad Reiner to a 70-38 OHSL Freedom National Division victory over visiting Mexico.
Homer improves to 3-2 in the division and 4-4 overall. Mexico falls to 0-4, 3-5 overall.
The hosts raced to a 14-3 lead after one quarter of play and upped its advantage to 32-18 by halftime. The Trojans put the game away with a 26-7 edge in third quarter scoring.
In addition to top scorer Reiner, senior Jayden Gavidia had a big night with three 3-pointers and 19 points in all for a Homer squad that got points from 10 different players.
Justin Marsden led Mexico with 15 points. Joe Gardner netted nine additional points for the Tigers.
Homer will return to OHSL Freedom Division action Tuesday. The Trojans host Chittenango with a tip-off for the JVs at 5 p.m. and the varsity game will follow.
HOMER JVs shook off some rust in the first half before pulling away in the second half for a 39-31 victory over Mexico. The Junior Trojans improve to 6-2 overall.
“We played poorly in the first half and not much better in the second half, but it was enough to win,” Homer coach Jeff Tabel said. “A win is a win and our defense was good. Mexico is very physical and scrappy. We also were a little rusty as we have not played since Dec. 22.”
Mexico led 10-7 after one quarter and 19-16 by halftime. The Trojans took a 26-23 lead through three quarters and sealed the victory in the fourth quarter.
Lannis Dodge paced the Homer attack with 10 points. Riley McEvoy chipped in with eight points.
Eastman scored 10 points to lead Mexico.
