ONEONTA — SUNY Cortland’s Joe Giaramita successfully defended his 197-pound title at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships, hosted by SUNY Oneonta on Saturday.
The Red Dragons finished third out of eight schools in the final team standings. Ithaca won the team crown with 207 points, followed by Brockport (169.5), Cortland (139.5), Oneonta (112), Lycoming (74), RIT (54.5), Oswego (35.5) and Alfred State (32).
Giaramita — a junior out of John H. Glenn High School who is ranked third nationally at 197 pounds — was one of 11 Cortland wrestlers to earn top-six finishes at the tournament. He opened with a pin in the quarterfinals, won by a 12-3 major decision in the semifinals and won 6-1 over Oneonta’s Chad Obzud in the title bout.
The title boosts Giaramita’s record to 18-1 on the season with five pins.
Three Red Dragons posted third-place showings. Sophomore Colin Barber finished third with a 4-1 record at 165 pounds, sophomore Brian Bulger went 4-1 to place third at 184 pounds and sophomore Nick Bellanza won his last three matches after losing his first contest to finish third at 197 pounds.
Four Cortland grapplers earned fourth-place finishes: freshman Adrian Berry at 141 pounds (4-2 record); sophomore Casey LaNave at 157 pounds (2-1 record); junior Joe Cataldo at 174 pounds (3-2 record); and sophomore Tyler Lilly at 184 pounds (3-2 record).
Cortland makes a return trip to Oneonta on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. dual match.
IN GYMNASTICS: Division II West Chester posted a 188.00-185.225 victory over the Red Dragons Saturday at Corey Gymnasium, though sophomore Amanda Scanlon and junior Meghan Goyden each posted event victories for Cortland.
Scanlon won balance beam with a 9.675 and finished fourth on uneven bars with a 9.275. Goyden tied for first on floor exercise with a 9.75, a score matched by West Chester’s Majesta Valentine, in addition to finishing fourth on vault with a 9.45.
Senior Elise Konikoff turned in a pair of top-three finishes, taking second on vault (9.50) and sharing third on balance beam (9.625). Also for the Red Dragons, senior Nicole Zangoglia finished second on uneven bars (9.40) and junior Maddy Scozzie was third on uneven bars (9.325).
Cortland visits Division I Cornell this Saturday, a 1 p.m. start in Ithaca.
IN WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Potsdam nipped Cortland 2-1 in an ECAC West contest, the game settled when Karley Cree scored with 3:53 left in regulation for the host Bears.
Potsdam (6-8-1) completed a weekend sweep to drop Cortland to 1-6-1 in the ECAC West and 2-10-1 overall.
Cortland grabbed a 1-0 lead 3:57 into the game on an unassisted power-play goal by senior Gwen Paul. Potsdam tied the game on a Jaci Morr goal, assisted by Brenna Wilson, 3:49 into the second period.
Cortland sophomore Kelly Farinella started in goal and finished with 31 saves as Potsdam out-shot the Red Dragons 33-29.
Cortland visits Hamilton College in a 7 p.m. non-league game Tuesday.
IN SWIMMING AND DIVING: Senior Mark Hanifin won the 500-yard freestyle to lead the Cortland men’s squad to a third-place finish at the RPI Kumpf Invitational Saturday in Troy.
Ithaca won the team title with 411 points, followed by RPI (402), Cortland (263), Clarkson (157), Skidmore (85) and Cobleskill (39). Dual scoring from the meet will be released later.
Hanifin captured the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.04, more than three seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Junior Reeve Callen out of Oswego placed second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.22) and 100-yard freestyle (48.80), and senior Brandon McManus was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:24.86).
Dylan Burns, Jack Jakubek, Alex Spatzer and Hanifin finished second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:38.64).
Cortland women finished fourth in the meet with 175 points, Ithaca the team champion with 493 points.
Junior Miranda Fergus finished second in both diving events with scores of 280.50 points on the 3-meter board and 264.20 points in the 1-meter competition. Junior Chelsey Simon placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.34) and seventh in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:22.77), while junior Ally Baraban was second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.20).
