Purple Tigers start big week by hosting Mexico

This is a big week for Cortland High wrestlers.
First, the Purple Tigers will be lugging a 29-match winning streak into Wednesday’s key OHSL Freedom Division match with visiting Mexico. The Tigers from Mexico are in first place in the league at 4-0 with a 7-5 overall record, while the Purple Tigers stand 2-1 in the league and 29-1 overall.
After Wednesday’s showdown in CHS’s lower gym, both teams will then be in the field for Saturday’s Section 3 Dual Meet Championships being held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
CHS is the fifth seed in the annual event and will face 12th seed Marcellus (14-2) in an upper bracket match starting at 10 a.m. Those two teams just met this past weekend during Cortland’s first place showing at the Hannibal Duals, when the Purple Tigers handed the Mustangs a 59-17 loss.
Mexico is seeded third in the Section 3 Duals and will open with No. 14 Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (14-4) at around 11:45 a.m. in a lower bracket contest.
In the other upper bracket matches, also starting at 10 a.m., top-seeded Adirondack (25-0) goes against No. 16 Indian River (15-5) while ninth seed Camden (11-2) meets No. 8 Baldwinsville (16-3) and No. 4 Fulton (15-4) faces 13th-seeded Canastota (6-2). The winner of the Cortland-Marcellus match faces the Fulton-Canastota survivor in the quarterfinals, which are slated to get underway at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The other lower brackets matches will also begin around 11:45 a.m. Sixth-seeded Central Valley Academy (18-1) goes against 11th-seed Cazenovia (18-5), with seventh seed South Jefferson (12-3) taking on 10th-seed Phoenix (12-5) and No. 2 General Brown (20-1) facing 15th-seeded Liverpool (16-3).
The semifinals are slated to begin around 3:15 p.m., with the championship match set to start around 5 p.m.
