Twin wins for Cortland Christian squads

 

 

 

Peter Hicks came up big for Cortland Christian Academy Thursday.
Hicks scored 23 points as the Saints pulled out a 55-47 Empire State Christian Athletic League boys’ basketball victory over Emmanuel Baptist from Penn Yan.
Cortland Christian Academy also took the girls’ contest against Emmanuel Baptist, by a 42-19 count.
Cortland CA boys 55, Emmanuel Baptist 47:The two teams battled to a 7-7 draw in the first quarter with the visitors pulling out to a 21-19 halftime advantage.
The Saints (7-0 ESCAL, 8-3 overall) used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to build a 33-30 advantage with Hicks scoring 10 of those points.
Emmanuel Baptist would battle back and lead 41-40 before the final Cortland CA run.
Ironically, the Saints would struggle at the foul line in the waning minutes of the game by missing seven of 11 free throw attempts in the final four minutes, but they did enough to hold on.
Hicks added eight rebounds, six steals and four assists to his line for the night. Stalone Cochran netted 11 points for the Saints.
Sergei Freyburger scored 16 points to lead Emmanuel Baptist (3-7). Brad Grizenko added 12 points while Austin MacNamara chipped in with 11 points.
Cortland CA girls 42, Emmanuel Baptist 19: Cortland Christian raced to a 12-0 lead and never looked back Thursday,
Korissa Kinney had a double-double for the Saints (7-0, 9-0) with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Linnea Sweeney added eight points and seven rebounds while Apphy Rofe had a balanced effort with six points, six rebounds, five steals and five assists.
Kristen Farley scored most of the Emmanuel Baptist (0-7) points. Farley netted 12 of the team’s 19 points.
Cortland Christian Academy returns to action Monday at Corning Christian Academy.
