Six straight wins for Purple Tigers

NEDROW — The Cortland High volleyball team made it six wins in a row Monday night, downing host Onondaga Central 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23.
Senior setter Danielle Lynch had 33 assists, 14 digs, two kills and two aces for the Purple Tigers, who improved to 10-3 in the OHSL Freedom/Liberty Division and overall, while sophomore libero Kristin Bush had 42 digs and senior outside hitter Lyuda Levitskaya 28 digs, nine kills, two assists and an ace.
In addition, junior outside hitter Caitlyn Ruggerio had 13 kills and four digs in her first start of the season while senior middle blocker Ali Bustamante 19 aces, four digs and two blocks, senior setter Shelina Carrion 27 digs and an ace and senior outside hitter Sam Daniels 15 digs and five aces.
Senior middle hitter Jenna Bygall had 18 kills, eight digs, four blocks and an assist for Onondaga (8-5 OHSL Patriot American and overall) while senior middle hitter Heaven Bouyea had 11 kills, seven digs, three aces and two blocks and sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Mack 26 digs. Senior setter Ashley Radio had 35 assists, a kill and a dig and junior libero Lauren Aguirre 13 digs.
“The first two sets we served and played very well, then I think we sat back a little, and let them back in the match,” said CHS coach Cheri Olson. “In both the third and fourth sets we actually came from behind and almost pulled them out, which would have been great, but we just dug ourselves too much of a hole that we couldn’t get out of. Missed serves played a huge factor. This match was really all about defense. Our defense has been great this year, and Onondaga is the scrappiest team we have played yet.
“Both teams were swinging away, but I would be surprised if either team reached their normal number of kills, despite the five sets. Nothing was hitting the floor on either side of the net. Some of the rallies were the longest we have had all season. By the end of the night you could tell the girls were exhausted, but they didn’t give up, and I was beyond proud of them.”
The Cortland JVs lost 25-10, 25-11 and are now 4-9 league and overall. Freshman setter/right side Julia Gutierrez and freshman middle hitter Reanna Moran had two kills each.
The Purple Tiger teams visit Weedsport on Wednesday starting with the JV match at 5:30 p.m.
