Nemesis Bears next foe for CHS spikers

The sixth-seeded Cortland High volleyball team will take a 14-5 record into today’s 7 p.m. Section 3 Class A semifinal match against No. 2 Chittenango at Clinton High. The Bears (17-2) beat the Purple Tigers twice this season in OHSL Freedom/Liberty Division matches, both of which went four sets.
Today’s other Class A semifinal, at 5 p.m. at Clinton, has top seed Carthage (18-0) going against No. 4 Watertown (16-3). The championship match will take place Saturday at Chittenango High, with the time to be determined.
Both of Wednesday’s Class D semifinal matches at Chittenango will feature local squads. Fourth-seeded Cincinnatus (8-6) goes against No. 1 Remsen (18-1), the defending champion, at 5 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s semis, which the Rams won in five sets.
DeRuyter (8-4), the third seed, meets No. 7 Manlius-Pebble Hill (9-10) at 7 p.m. in the second semifinal. The Class D title match will also take place Saturday at Chittenango High, with the time to be determined.
Snow Spoils Schedule
The latest round of heavy snowfall caused changes in the schedules of three Cortland High teams.
The Purple Tiger varsity and JV girls’ basketball squads were to have hosted Mexico Monday night. Those games will now take place Wednesday at Shafer Gym, starting with the JV contest at 5:30 p.m.
Due to its not being able to practice on Monday, the Cortland High wrestling team’s match with CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt to finish a contest suspended on Jan. 28 was wiped out and will not be made up.
Homer Central basketball boys had a slated trip to Oswego postponed Monday, that game to be replayed on Wednesday. The JVs start things off at 5 p.m with the varsity game to follow.
Court Showdown Tonight
Cortland High basketball boys host Bishop Ludden tonight in a match-up of division leaders, the varsity contest slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Shafer Gymnasium.
The Gaelic Knights from Bishop Ludden are a perfect 9-0 against OHSL Freedom Division foes and in first place in the American Division, boasting a 15-2 overall record that earned them a No. 20 state ranking in last week’s Class AA state poll.
Cortland is 14-3 overall and is an honorable mention in the Class A state polling, the Purple Tigers currently battling Jamesville-DeWitt for first place in the National Division..
