Panthers open with solid win

YAPHANK — The 2015 season started well for the Tompkins Cortland CC baseball team Monday as the Panthers beat Bronx CC 7-3 at the Baseball Heaven complex on Long Island.
The Panthers, who opened the season with a win for the first time since 2008, took the early lead in the bottom of the first as Malik Fogg lashed a three-run home run. Anthony Ferrezza doubled home another run in the bottom of the second and later scored on an error to make it 5-0.
TC3 starter Jonathan Frost cruised through the first three innings before allowing two runs in the fourth and exiting after the frame, having allowed four hits while striking out seven.
Jean Germosen came on in relief, tossing three strong innings that saw him allow one run and strike out four to pick up the win. Bronx CC (0-1) scored its final run in the sixth, but the Panthers responded in the bottom of the frame. Tully’s Aaron Wintermute singled with one out and then scored on a two-run homer by Ty Christian, making the score 7-3. Joe DeAngelis closed out the game for the Panthers, striking out four over the final two innings to seal the win.
The balanced TC3 attack featured runs scored by six different players, with Christian crossing the plate twice. Christian and Wintermute each went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead an offense that featured seven hits, four walks, and three hit batters.
The Panthers were to continue their spring break trip today with a doubleheader against Queensborough Community College.
