Softball team romps twice

 

The SUNY Cortland softball team posted a pair of convincing victories at the Rebel Spring Games in WInter Haven, Fla. Tuesday with a 9-1 triumph over Eastern Connecticut State and an 8-0 shutout against Skidmore. Both games were called early due to the eight-run rule with the first game lasting five innings and the second game six innings.
In baseball, Cortland improved to 11-0 with a 14-2 rout of Eastern Connecticut State Tuesday.
SOFTBALL
Cortland 9, Eastern Connecticut St. 1: Sarah Salamone earned the win in the circle for the Red Dragons (3-5 overall) while handing the Warriors (4-1) their first loss of the season. Salamone scattered six hits and walked one over five innings. She struck out one and gave up one unearned run.
Erin Wolstenholme led Cortland with her 3-for-3 bat that included an RBI and three runs scored. Jamie Bucci was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored and Courtney Kadish went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Cortland 8, Skidmore 0: Cortland scored seven runs over the first three innings and cruised to the win over the Thoroughbreds (2-4).
Alexandrea Flint combined with three relievers for the shutout, but only pitched three innings and was one inning shy of being eligible for the win. She allowed one hit and four walks and struck out two. Freshman Kirstyn Alonzo was ruled Cortland’s most effective reliever and was awarded her first collegiate victory. She retired the side in the fifth inning. Freshman Katie Pitkin allowed one infield single in the fourth and Jamie Lachall gave up a bunt single in the sixth.
Cortland finished with 13 hits and played errorless ball. Diane Cork was 3-for-3, Kadish finished 2-for-3 and Barbato was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Wolstenholme went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Cortland (3-5) will be idle Wednesday and returns to action in Winter Haven Thursday versus Centenary (N.J.) at 10 a.m. and Ramapo at 12:15 p.m.
BASEBALL
Cortland 14, Eastern Connecticut St. 2: Cortland pounded out 19 hits, including three homers, as the Red Dragons defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 14-2, at Pat Thomas Stadium. Cortland is ranked third nationally by D3baseball.com and is second in the opening ABCA Div. III poll that was released Tuesday. Eastern Connecticut State (1-5) opened the season ranked 19th nationally, but has since dropped from the rankings after losses to ranked squads Kean, Webster and Rowan.
Cortland scored six runs in the third inning to open the floodgates. Austin Clock hit a grand slam, followed directly by an Adam Smith solo homer. Anthony Simon doubled and scored from second base on a wild pitch.
Smith finished 3-for-3 with a homer, double and RBI to pace the Cortland attack. Donny Castaldo ended 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI. Clock was 1-for-3 with his grand slam and four RBIs. and Conrad Ziemendorf went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. In addition, Keith Andrews and Justin Teague each were 2-for-2, Matthew Michalski went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Sean Getman was 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs.
Chad Adams finished 2-for-3 with a double and RBI for Eastern Connecticut State.
Red Dragon starter Evan Honce earned the victory and is 2-0 on the season. He allowed only two hits and no walks and struck out five in four scoreless frames. Zach Ferris–Cortland’s second reliever–gave up one hit and fanned one in the seventh while Travis Laitar struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth to end the game.
Cortland has a day off Wednesday and will face UMass Boston Thursday at 3 p.m. at the North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte. The Red Dragons will also be in Port Charlotte for SUNYAC games versus New Paltz with a doubleheader Friday at noon and a single game Saturday at 11 a.m.

honors for 3 Dragons
Senior second baseman Mark DeMilio has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending March 15.
DeMilio batted .350 (7-for-20) with a homer, two doubles, two walks, five RBI and nine runs scored in a 5-0 week for the nationally ranked Red Dragons. He also handled 21 chances at second base without an error.
Junior attack Zach Hopps has been picked as the SUNYAC Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for the week ending March 15.
Hopps scored 10 points on four goals and six assists in a 1-1 week for the then sixth-ranked Red Dragons (2-2).
Junior midfielder Tara Monaghan has been named the SUNYAC Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending March 15.
Monaghan helped lead the nationally ranked Red Dragons to a pair of non-conference wins to start the season.
In a season-opening 19-10 victory at home versus Union, Monaghan tallied a career-high six goals and added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls. In a 14-10 win at top-ranked Gettysburg on Saturday, she tallied three goals and one assist and also contributed five ground balls, one caused turnover and four draws.
With her four points, Monaghan became the 39th player in program history to reach 100 career points (86-15-101).
