Red Dragon roundup: First loss for baseball team

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. – Coley Barker’s RBI single through the left side drove home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as UMass Boston defeated SUNY Cortland, 4-3, to hand the Red Dragons their first loss this season.
The Red Dragons–ranked third in the nation–dropped to 11-1 with the loss while the Beacons improved to 5-4. Cortland remains in Port Charlotte for three SUNYAC games versus New Paltz–a doubleheader today starting at noon and a single game Saturday at 11 a.m.
In softball, Cortland was on both sides of shutouts, winning 5-0 over Centenary and falling 6-0 to Ramapo.
In women’s golf, Cortland defeated McDaniel College 346-373 in its season opener.
BASEBALL
UMass-Boston 4, Cortland 3: UMB’s winning rally started when Anthony Searles reached on an error to start the ninth. Charlie LaPaglia bunted Searles to second and Cortland elected to intentionally walk Trevor Bouvier. Barker, who entered the game in the top of the eighth to play second after the original second baseman was pinch hit for, ripped the first pitch he saw for the game-winning hit to score Searles from second.
Trailing 3-1, Cortland tide the game in the top of the sixth. Vinny Bomasuto walked, Austin Clock singled and Adam Smith bunted the runners to second and third. Donny Castaldo hit a sac fly to drive in Bomasuto and an error during the play allowed Clock to score the tying run.
The Red Dragons had a chance to take the lead in the seventh. but left runners stranded on first and third. Cortland was retired in order in each of the last two innings.
Daniel Mantoni started for UMB and gave up five hits and three runs over eight innings for a no decision. He struck out seven and walked three. Josh Cummiskey pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with the victory.
Zach Ferris started for Cortland and allowed three runs, two earned, in five and a third innings. He gave up six hits, struck out three and walked none. Adam Brant allowed only two hits and one unearned run with one walk and one strikeout over three innings but suffered the loss.
Mantoni finished 3-for-4 with an RBI in addition to his pitching performance for the Beacons. Bouvier went 2-for-2 with a walk and RBI. For Cortland, Bomasuto was 1-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice. Clock and Mark DeMilio each ended 1-for-3.
SOFTBALL
Cortland 9, Eastern Connecticut St. 1: Red Dragon senior Sarah Salamone threw a two-hit shutout as Cortland defeated Centenary College (N.J.), 5-0, to open Thursday’s action at the Rebel Spring Games.
Salamone improved to 2-1 with the shutout that featured nine strikeouts and only one walk. She retired the first nine batters before allowing a leadoff single to Heather Passaro in the fourth. Passaro was eventually stranded at third base. Salamone also walked Samantha Darling with one one in the sixth and gave up a Becca Raymond leadoff single in the seventh.
Jamie Bucciwent 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead Cortland’s nine-hit attack. Niki Barbato went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI while Courtney Kadish finished 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI.Centenary (1-6) starter Kylie Morgan allowed nine hits and three walks and was charged with five runs, four earned, in six innings. She fanned one batter.
Ramapo 6, Cortland 0: Ramapo (7-3) won behind a three-hit shutout from Katrina Buczkowski who struck out three, walked none and used an effective riseball to record 15 of 21 outs in the air.
Alexandrea Flint started for Cortland and gave up five hits and five runs over two and two thirds. She walked three. Jamie Lachall pitched the final three and a third innings and permitted one hit and one walk, struck out one and was charged with one run.
All of the Roadrunners’ six runs came in the third inning. The key hit was a bases-loaded double by Jaclyn Lima.
Melanie Walling finished the day 2-for-2 to lead the Ramapo hitters. Lima was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while Grace Brennan went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Cortland’s baserunners came on a two-out single by Barbato in the first, a lead-off single by Carrie Stoddard in the fifth and a one-out single by Erin Wolstenholme in the seventh, but the Red Dragons were not able to get a runner past second base.
Cortland (4-6) will complete its Florida trip with games Friday versus Springfield and St. Norbert.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Cortland 346, McDaniel College 373: SUNY Cortland opened the spring portion of its women’s golf schedule with a 346-373 dual win over McDaniel College of Maryland. The competition was held at the Dye Course of the Barefoot Resort & Golf Club.
Carly Peters was medalist with an 80, Peters was followed by Red Dragon teammates Melissa Rath (84), Samantha Morley (90), Anna Haley (92), Taylor O’Halloran (95) and Bri Sovring (96).
Alise McNutt was McDaniel’s top golfer with an 88. Casey Marson shot 92, Janine Borrelli (95), Katie Pass (98) and Alex Philo (104).
Cortland will compete at the Vassar Invitational April 11-12.
