Red Rams nose out host Homer

The Homer Central girls’ lacrosse team played on even terms with visiting Jamesville-DeWitt Monday night but ended up falling to 0-2 on the season in a 9-8 non-league loss.
Senior midfielder Morgan Hollenbeck scored three goals at Butts Field to lead the Trojans and now has six on the season. Junior midfielder Olivia Porter scored twice, her fourth and fifth goals of the season, while senior attack Natali Partigianoni had a goal and an assist and two players, junior midfielder Carolyne Yonta and freshman attack Nina Armideo, each scored one goal.
Senior midfielder Caroline Kopp scored five goals to pace the Red Rams in their season-opener, which was tied for the last time with six minutes left. Sophomore attack Lizzie O’Brien, sophomore midfielder Bess Murad, freshman attack Ali Durkin and senior midfielder Meghan Byrnes each scored one goal for the winners.
Junior Kendra Allen made two saves and freshman Katie Lawrence stopped six shots in the Homer nets. The J-D goalie, who was not identified, made one save.
“It was a great team defensive effort, with especially good work on defense by Carolyne and Hannah Casey,” Homer coach Ed Porter said, Casey his junior midfielder. “Both our goalies were strong inside the crease. J-D is a very quick and disciplined team. They have many offensive weapons, so I was pleased we worked so hard on defense to limit their offensive chances.
“On the offensive side, we spread the scoring around for the second game and didn’t panic when we got down a few goals. They fought their way back in to the game again and again,” he added. “Olivia was face-guarded for much of the first half and it was great to see other girls take advantage of opportunities. Kim Dieroff battled us even in draw controls.”
HOMER JVs lost to J-D 12-6 and also fell to 0-2 on the season. Sophomore attack/midfielder Marissa Urban scored twice for the hosts while freshman attack Molly Burhans had a goal and an assist and eighth-grade attack/midfielder Karly Roos, sophomore attack Margaret McLyman and freshman midfielder Jodi Maus one goal each.
“Our girls really came out ready to play and showed a lot of heart,” Trojans coach Geoff Sorenson said. “We out hustled J-D and really made it a game against a very strong offense. At the half the score was tied 5-5. We have a lot of young players and I’m still battling with getting all the puzzle pieces in the right place to make this team successful.”
Both Homer teams visit Marcellus Thursday to open OHSL Freedom National Division play, the JVs getting things started at 5:30 p.m.
