Red Dragon tandem ignites lopsided win

 

 

 

This one was over early.
For the second time this week, a dominating first half performance carried the SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse team to a lopsided victory as the Red Dragons dumped visiting St. John Fisher 19-4 on Thursday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.
Senior Marilyn Farrell and junior Tara Monaghan combined to score nine goals to go along with nine assists as the nationally fifth-ranked Red Dragons grabbed 11-1 control by the time halftime arrived.
After jumping out to a 9-0 lead in a 19-5 romp at Potsdam on Tuesday, Cortland scored the opening five goals against St. John Fisher before breezing to an eighth victory in nine outings this season. The lead grew to 17-1 some 11 minutes into the second half.
Monaghan had career highs of eight points and seven goals, and with her first score of the game became the 26th player in program history to reach 100 career goals.
Farrell totaled a career-high 10 points on two goals and eight assists. The eight assists were also a personal best and tied the school record set by Erica Geremia at St. Lawrence during the 2013 season. In addition, Farrell’s 10 points put her over 200 in her career as she became just the 13th player in school history to reach that mark.
Senior midfielder Emma Hayes-Hurley added five goals, picked up an assist, won a career-best 12 draw controls and collected three ground balls for the Red Dragons. Sophomore attack Kristen Ohberg finished with two goals and three assists, junior Nicole Bello collected a career-high four points on two goals and two assists, junior Ashley Gentile netted a goal and freshman Hannah Elmer chipped in with two assists.
Cortland held a 29-9 shot edge, sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlian with three saves for the winners.
The visiting Cardinals (6-4) got goals from junior Sierra Badger, junior Chrissy Cook, sophomore Jordan Johnson and freshman Morgan Young .
The Red Dragons return to SUNY Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting unbeaten Geneseo in a 12:30 p.m. Stadium Complex start. Geneseo is 1-0 in conference play and 6-0 overall after beating New Paltz 12-6 yesterday.
— Cortland men will bring a three-game winning streak into Saturday’s SUNYAC opener, the Red Dragons (5-4) hosting Potsdam in a 3:30 p.m. start at the Stadium Complex.
