National hockey honors for Dragons Zappia, Broderick

 

 

 

SUNY Cortland men’s ice hockey senior forward Nick Zappia and freshman forward Dan Broderick earned national Division III postseason honors from U.S. College Hockey Online.
Zappia was named to the All-USCHO third team, while Broderick was selected to the USCHO All-Rookie Team.
Manlius native Zappia finished the season with 24 goals and 23 assists for 47 points in 25 games. He led Division III nationally with 1.88 points and 0.96 goals per game, and his 24 goals were tied for first nationally with a player from Adrian who appeared in 30 games.
Zappia scored at least one point in 24 straight games to start the season,with a scoring stretch of 26 consecutive games total dating back to last season.
Broderick registered 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points in 25 contests. The rookie from White Plains ranked fifth nationally with 1.60 points per game and tied Zappia for ninth nationally with 0.92 assists per game. Broderick’s points-per-game average was second-best among Division III freshmen.
He recorded at least one point in 21 of 25 games.
IN TRACK AND FIELD: Cortland senior Jarred Iacovelli was named he SUNYAC Men’s Athlete of the Week and freshman Dawan Jones Field Athlete of the Week.
The Red Dragons also had senior Taylor Hudson was selected as the SUNYAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
In addition, Jones has been named the ECAC Co-Rookie of the Week, sharing that award with St. John Fisher’s Mark VanMarter.
Iacovelli finished fourth out of 24 competitors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Princeton University Sam Howell Invitational. His time of 9:15.59 ranks third nationally and is an ECAC qualifier.
Jones placed second in the triple jump at the Ramapo Roadrunner Invitational with a 46 feet-0.5 effort that ranks sixth nationally. Hudson won the long jump (18-5) and was second in the high jump(5-6).
The Red Dragons will be sending various athletes to the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational, the Moravian Coach P invitational and the Bucknell Bison Distance Carnival this Saturday.
IN WOMEN’S LACROSSE: Cortland’s 1 p.m hosting of Oswego in Saturday’s SUNYAC contest will also be a fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics. The event at the Stadium Complex is the highlight of Cortland’s celebration of NCAA Division III Week.
All ticket proceeds from the game, in addition to money raised during an in-game raffle, will be donated to the Special Olympics New York Southern Tier chapter.
Special Olympics athletes will be in attendance at the game and will be recognized at halftime.
The Athletics department has partnered with SUNY Cortland’s Adapted Physical Education program for the event.
Undergraduate students from that program will attend with their community participants, and the students will coordinate in-game activities for those community members in the grass area near the Stadium’s White Field.
