Purple Tigers bounce back by beating Bears

The Cortland High boys’ lacrosse team had a good comeback Thursday night.
In their first game since Tuesday night’s 18-6 loss at Homer, the Purple Tigers used a strong performance over the middle two quarters to beat visiting Chittenango 20-14 on Moiseichik Field.
Senior attackman Matt May spearheaded the winners’ barrage, finding the back of the net seven times — his first goal coming eight seconds into the game. He now has a team-high 28 goals on the season.
Twin brother Mike May, a senior midfielder, scored four goals and added three assists while junior attack Chris Dovi had three goals and four assists, junior midfielder Joe Piedigrossi three goals and senior attack Anthony Ricottilli scored one goal and added 10 assists, the first one on Matt May’s opening tally, and now has a team-high 36 points this season on 10 goals and 26 assists.
Junior midfielders Connor Caughey and Bronson Gagliano each scored once to round out the hosts’ scoring. Senior attack Duncan Smith scored six goals and also had an assist while junior attack Garrett Sadler added four goals to pace Chittenango, now 1-4 in the OHSL Freedom National Division and 4-6 overall.
Cortland sophomore goalie Cameron Aldrich made eight saves while Bears senior goalie Dolan Rockwood stopped 19 shots. No shot totals were reported.
The Purple Tigers, now 3-3 in the Freedom National and 3-6 overall, opened the scoring early but still trailed 6-5 after the first quarter. They outscored Chittenango 6-1 in the second, though, to take an 11-7 halftime lead and went on an 8-3 third-quarter team for a commanding 19-10 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.
“We got off to a quick start which was nice, scoring in the first eight seconds,” CHS coach Matt Blaich said. “This was a good bounce-back game for us. We really shared the ball well for most of the game, with nine different guys getting in on the scoring. Connor Caughey and Nate McCormick were strong for us at faceoffs tonight.”
The winners won 22 of the game’s 38 faceoffs.
Cortland hosts Oswego Saturday in a 10:30 a.m. start on Moiseichik Field.
CORTLAND JVs fell to 0-6 on the season in heartbreaking fashion, Chittenango scoring the game-winning goal with 49 seconds left to prevail 10-9. The hosts trailed most of the way, down 3-1 after one quarter, 7-4 at halftime and 8-6 after three. No further information was available.
