Monaghan’s eight goals carries Cortland to finals

Behind a career-high eight goals by Tara Monaghan, the SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse team is a win away from capturing a 17th consecutive conference playoff title.
The top-seeded and No. 2 nationally-ranked Red Dragons rolled to a 21-8 win over fourth-seed Brockport to get Friday’s SUNY Athletic Conference semifinal session underway at the Stadium Complex.
With a 13th consecutive victory, the Red Dragons (16-1) will take on second-seed Fredonia (15-2) in today’s noontime title game — with the winner guaranteed a spot in the upcoming NCAA Division III playoffs.
Fredonia beat third-seed Geneseo 8-3 in the second semifinal contest.
While Monaghan had the huge scoring day, senior midfielder Emma Hayes-Hurley had three goals, two assists and won seven draws for the Final Four hosts. Junior Ashley Gentile added three goals and classmate Nicole Bello netted two goals and had three assists.
Sophomore Kristen Ohberg added two goals with an assist in a game where both sides got off 29 shots, while freshman Hannah Elmer scored once and recorded two assists. Senior Marilyn Farrell and junior Elise Bennett also scored Cortland goals, with sophomore Nicolette Tortorici picking up an assist.
Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlian made 10 saves in the victory, though junior Makensie Schuber and freshman Jessica Boddery had three-goal outings for the Golden Eagles.
Hayes-Hurley scored the first two goals of the game for Cortland but Brockport (10-7) answered right back with goals from Schuber and Nina Tassone to even the score at two with 22:15 remaining in the first half.
The Red Dragons then closed the half by outscoring the Golden Eagles 9-2 on four goals from Monaghan, two scores from Ohberg and Gentile and a goal from Hayes-Hurley.
Monaghan and Brockport’s Boddery traded goals to open up the second half before Gentile, Monaghan and Farrell scored three unanswered goals for Cortland. Boddery netted a goal for the Golden Eagles, but Cortland scored six unanswered goals, Monaghan and Bello had two goals each and Elmer and Bennett each added a score for a 21-6 bulge.
Fredonia 8, Geneseo 3: In a clash of nationally-ranked squads, No 17 Fredonia (15-2) topped No. 18 Geneseo (14-3), as sophomore attack Emily Polizzi scored a career-high five goals.
The Blue Devils set a schol record for wins in a season, also getting goals from Kristie Kleine, Shelby DePew and Audrey Yokopovich.
