Top-seeded Skaneateles ousts Trojans

SKANEATELES – There’s a lot to be proud of as Homer Central continues its upswing in the girls’ lacrosse program.
Granted a 21-4 loss in the Section 3 Class C quarterfinals to the defending sectional and New York State champion Skaneateles Lakers is not the best way to end the season, but the eighth-seeded Trojans still posted their second winning season in a row and third straight year in post-season play.
Homer finishes the season at 10-7.
Top-seed Skaneateles (14-3) will face fourth-seed Marcellus (14-4) in Thursday’s semifinals at Christian Brothers Academy. The Mustangs were 11-7 victors over fifth-seed Westhill (10-6).
Second-seed South Jefferson (13-4) will meet third-seed General Brown (14-3) in the other semifinal. South Jeff pounded seventh-seed LaFayette (11-7) 22-5 and General Brown was a 19-9 winner over sixth-seed Cazenovia (10-8) Tuesday.
“Skaneateles is a great team,” Homer coach Ed Porter said. “They are fast, strong and apply pressure all over the field. Despite the lopsided score, our girls played hard and never gave up.
“For our seniors this was their last game in a Homer uniform,” he continued. “It is hard to end the season for them, but all of them are on to a bright future.”
Those seniors are midfielder Morgan Hollenbeck, attacker Natali Partigianoni, defender Olivia Roos, attacker Delaney Root, defender McKenzie Brown and attacker Julia Brazo.
Skaneateles jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first half and cruised to the quarterfinal victory.
Kyla Sears led the Lakers’ assault with five goals and one assist. Hannah Powers (three assists) and Bailey Herr (one assist) each netted three goals while Emma Goodell (two assists) and Sophie Kush collected two goals apiece. Also finding the cage were Hannah Logan, Catie Woodruff, Tate Green, Elizabeth Lake, Molly Newton and Mikela Terhune. Logan and Woodruff had one helper.
Olivia Porter and Kim Dieroff collected two goals each for Homer. Dieroff ends the season with 16 goals and eight assists for 24 points.
Adding two missed goals to her season total from Monday’s newspaper article, Porter sets the new single-season scoring record with 85 points on 64 goals and 21 assist. Her 64 goals are the third best single-season effort behind the 68 goal totals of Nikki Tinker (1995) and Kaylee Benz (2008). The junior is third on the all-time scoring list with 179 points on 143 goals and 36 assists. Emma Porter (2010-13) is the all-time leading scorer with 165 goals-98 assists for 263 points with Katelyn Gray (2009-12) second (161-22 183 points).
