All-state laurels for Brown

Cortland High’s Sage Brown was chosen on the all-state Class A baseball squad.

Four local players have been selected to the 2015 New York State Sports Writers Association all-state baseball squads.
Cortland High senior infielder Sage Brown was named to the Class A ninth team, while two Dryden High teammates — sohomore pitcher/utility man Jason Wojcinski and senior catcher Noah Welgoss — made the Class B fifth and eighth teams, respectively.
McGraw Central senior catcher Collin Pickert was a third-team selection in Class D.

CLASS A
Brown — who played second base, shortstop and first base for the Purple Tigers — hit .362 with four doubles, 17 RBIs, 14 runs scored, five walks and eight stolen bases this spring.
The Purple Tigers won the OHSL Freedom National Division pennant this season, finishing 10-8 overall for Coach Ben Albright.
The Class A Coach of the Year is Scott Saunders from state champion Byram Hills (Section 1), whose junior pitcher/centerfielder Frankie Vesuvio is the Player of the Year.
Local selections include Syracuse CBA senior shortstop/pitcher Webb Little, first team; Owego senior designated hitter Matt Marsiili, second team; Vernon-Verona-Sherrill senior pitcher Zack Durant and Johnson City senior outfielder Nick Chilson, third team; V-V-S senior third baseman, Vestal junior catcher and Union-Endicott junior third baseman Thomas Pasquale, fourth team and Syracuse CBA senior outfielder Sam Little and Maine-Endwell senior pitcher Jason Wasilnak, fifth team.
In addition, the sixth team includes New Hartford senior shortstop Zack Kesterson and Owego senior outfielder C.J. Bergman. Jamesville-DeWitt senior first baseman Jake Binder and Vestal sophomore pitcher Joe Iacovelli made the seventh team, J-D senior shortstop Xander Ferlenda and Vestal senior pitcher Matt Heichemer are on the eighth team and joining Brown on the ninth team is Chenango Forks senior outfielder Chad Raychel.

CLASS B
Wojcinski hit .441, tied for first in the IAC, in his first varsity season with nine extra-base hits, 13 RBIs, 25 runs, 13 walks and 11 stolen bases. Welgoss hit .383 with 13 RBIs and 17 runs.
Steve DeCaro, who led Section 11’s Mattituck to the state championship, is Coach of the Year and his junior pitcher/outfielder Joe Tardif is Player of the Year.
Senior outfielder Dave Matthews from Susquehanna Valley and Seton Catholic Central senior catcher Tyler Krowiak made the first team, with Holland Patent junior pitcher/catcher Nico Ramos, Seton Catholic senior pitcher David George and Oneonta senior shortstop Connor Tavarone making the second team, Oneonta senior pitcher Brock Eichler and Elmira Heights Edison senior catcher/pitcher Josh Cosgrove the third team and Oneonta senior third baseman Josh Garufi and Union Springs senior catcher Skyler Jennings the fourth team.
Holland Patent senior pitcher Jared Fisher and Union Springs senior pitcher Nick Slobodiak join Wojcinski on the fifth team. The sixth team includes Solvay junior shortstop Sam Kippen, Union Springs junior first baseman Connor Siracusa and Waverly junior shortstop Peyton Miller. Newark Valley junior pitcher/shortstop Blake Novi and Waverly senior first baseman Kyle Kinsley are on the seventh team, Waverly sophomore outfielder Brendyn Stillman and Welgoss are eighth-teamers and the ninth team includes Bishop Ludden senior third baseman Robbie Wiegand and Union Springs freshman pitcher/infielder Nick Valentino.

CLASS D
McGraw’s Pickert hit .449 with six doubles, a home run, 22 RBIs, 17 runs and six walks for the Central Counties League regular season co-champions.
The Coach of the Year is Chris White and the Player of the Year is senior pitcher/shortstop Vincent Ciaravino, both from state champion Smithtown Christian out of Section 11.
Sophomore catcher/shortstop Ryan Enos from state semifinalist Oriskany and junior pitcher/outfielder Ryan Slatcher from Hancock made the first team, Oriskany junior pitcher/shortstop Kyle Liddy, Hancock sophomore pitcher/catcher/infielder Lane Bass and Deposit pitcher/second baseman Dustin Dailey earned second-team berths, Pickert was joined on the third team by Windham-Ashland-Jewitt junior teammates Anthony Savasta (shortstop/pitcher/catcher) and Aidan Cohane (catcher/shortstop/outfielder) and the fourth team includes Stamford senior infielder Matt Anderson and Edmeston senior shortstop Linton Wainwright.
Among the fifth-teamers are Remsen senior pitcher Sebastian Bullard, Franklin senior pitcher/infielder Joe Terrano, Milford senior pitcher/shortstop Paul Van Warner and Downsville sophomore catcher Nick Hill.

CLASS AA
State champion Mamaroneck from Section 1 had both the Coach of the Year in Mike Chiapparelli and Player of the Year in senior pitcher/outfielder Kumar Nambiar.
Cicero-North Syracuse senior pitcher Steven Theetge made the first team and his teammate Jake McArdell, a senior first-baseman, is a second-teamer. Horseheads sophomore shortstop Nico Limoncelli is a third-teamer and West Genesee junior shortstop Colin Brevard is a fourth-teamer. The fifth team includes Auburn junior utilityman Stephen Bennett and Horseheads junior pitcher Jake Burlingame.
Among the sixth-teamers are junior shortstop Vito Castronovo from Utica Proctor and Corning junior pitcher Dan Madden. Proctor sophomore first baseman Vicenzo Castronovo and Horseheads senior second baseman Matt Smith are on the seventh team, West Genesee senior outfielder Will Randall and Corning senior pitcher Ryan Walker made the eighth team and the ninth team includes West Genesee senior pitcher Evan Reichel.

CLASS C
Top honors went to Coach of the Year George Brooks and Player of the Year John Rooney (senior pitcher/first baseman) from state champion Hoosic Valley from Section 2.
Sophomore shortstop/pitcher Parker Hendershot and senior pitcher/infielder Peter Simmons from state semifinalist Tioga are first-teamers. Dolgeville senior second baseman/pitcher Dan Fox, Sidney junior pitcher/first baseman Kyle Greene and Elmira Notre Dame senior pitcher/shortstop Parker May made the second team, Tioga teammates Adam Layman (senior infielder/outfielder) and Jesse Manuel (junior centerfielder/pitcher) are third-teamers and among the fourth-teamers are Fabius-Pompey senior catcher Chase Breed, Sidney sophomore second baseman Alex Hoskins and Unadilla Valley senior first baseman Auston Taylor.
Trumansburg junior pitcher Trevor Rumsey and Elmira Notre Dame senior first baseman/outfielder Cameron Reed are on the fifth team, and the sixth team includes Fabius-Pompey sophomore pitcher Chris Wagner and, from Tioga, junior second baseman Jake Evanek and senior outfielder Lucas Richardson.
