Mother Nature gets best of Crush, again

 

 

 

For the second straight day, rain postponed action in the New York Collegiate Baseball League for the Cortland Crush.
The Crush were slated to travel to Oneonta for a doubleheader with the Outlaws, but the twinbill was postponed until July 13. The first game will start at 5 p.m. at Damaschke Field.
The Crush will host Oneonta this afternoon in another rescheduled doubleheader. The first game will begin at 4 p.m. on Greg’s Field with the second game to follow 30 minutes after the first game ends
Friday is a scheduled day off for Cortland before the Crush host Geneva Saturday at 3 p.m. Geneva will entertain Cortland Sunday in a 1 p.m. twinbill at McDonough Park before the Crush complete the four-game set with a Monday 6 p.m. contest at Greg’s Field.
With Cortland at 12-12 at the midway point of the season, the team is slightly ahead with its 2014 first season, The Crush won a July 2 doubleheader to improve to 11-14. Cortland did not win its 12th game of that 15-31 campaign until July 16.
Homer Central alumnus Zephan Kash leads the Cortland offense this season. The Mansfield University senior is hitting .310 (22-for-71) with two doubles, three home runs, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored. Kash’s batting average, hits, home runs and RBIs all lead the team while his home run total is also the best in the NYCBL.
Niagara University sophomore Julian Gallup leads the Crush and NYCBL in stolen bases with 15. Gallup has only been thrown out twice and his 16 runs scored is high for the team.
For the season, Cortland is hitting .219 as a team with 167 hits and 83 runs scored. The opposition has 168 hits and 84 runs scored.
On the pitching side, State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota junior T.J. Peterson leads the Cortland starters with three wins and 19 strikeouts. Kentucky Wesleyan sophomore Nate Verst has the lowest ERA among starters at 1.16 with 17 strikeouts. Verst has pitched well, but does not have a win or loss on his record yet. He is the current NYCBL Pitcher of the Week. Peterson held that honor the previous week as the Crush staff has a combined ERA of 2.23 while holding the opposition to a .219 batting average. Niagara University sophomore Tyler Saundry leads the Crush in saves with four.
There were two NYCBL games reported from Wednesday as the Syracuse Junior Chiefs defeated the Geneva Red Wings 3-1 while Rochester downed Genesee 6-4.
